Grove Neighbourhood Centre

Background

Our aims

Our purpose is to provide a social centre for local people, premises for a wide variety of local groups, a volunteer project offering help and support to people housebound or isolated by disability, and representation of local people on matters of concern. We have no political affiliation.

The area we serve lies between Goldhawk Road and King Street. It has Ravenscourt Road and Paddenswick Road as its Western boundary, and Richford Street, Grove Mews and Hammersmith Grove as its Eastern boundary.

Our story

The Grove Neighbourhood Council began life in 1973 at a house in Overstone Road. It was part of a nationwide project to set up local neighbourhood councils in urban areas. The councils were designed to represent local people, help with housing and other problems, and provide community facilities.

The neighbourhood council's area of operation was the old Grove ward - hence our name, the Grove Neighbourhood Centre. The ward boundaries were revised a few years ago, but the area we serve is still the old Grove ward area.

Our next home was a prefab building in Bradmore Park Road, and this became the Grove Neighbourhood Centre (GNC). In 1982 the prefab was demolished and replaced by a one-storey purpose-built community centre. In the same year the Grove Neighbourhood Centre Ltd was registered as a company limited by guarantee (company no. 1645249). In 1983 the Grove Neighbourhood Centre was registered as a charity (charity no. 287904).

In 1994 a grant from Hammersmith and Fulham Council enabled us to add a second storey to our building, and provide premises for an increased number and range of activities. Our building won the Hammersmith Society's annual Environment Award in 1995, for local buildings displaying imaginative design.

Our finances

In the year ended 31 March 2007, our total expenditure was £81,600. We met 60% of these costs from the income which we generate ourselves - mainly rent and hire income from the use of our premises, and income from fetes, jumble sales, etc. We met 38% of our costs with grants, from Hammersmith and Fulham Council, and from Awards For All. We funded the small remainder of our costs from reserves.

Every year we present our audited Report and Accounts at our Annual General Meeting. The next AGM will be on 12 November 2008.
